1. Can you get a key out of a lock without damaging the lock?
Yes there is a chance that if a key is stuck in a lock, it can be removed without damaging the lock. It is however advisable to ask a skilled locksmith to remove it as he will have the right tools for the job, so minimising any damage. It is more costly to replace a damaged lock than to call out a locksmith just to remove a key that is stuck in the lock.
2. How long does it take to replace a front door lock?
If you are replacing the old lock with a new lock that is the same, it should only take about 20 minutes. If you are fitting a new lock that is different, it can take perhaps 30-40 minutes.
3. What are the best locks for a front door?
The best locks for a front door are locks that will increase the difficulty of picking or bumping the locks. These types of locks will have extra sets of tumblers within the lock to make it more resistant to manipulation. Deadbolts are locking mechanisms that can be added to a door and they can’t be moved except by rotating a key. A Multi-locking mechanism has a pin within a pin design with keys drilled to precise depths to engage the pins, making it difficult to manipulate. This type of lock is similar in design to the euro cylinder lock and is generally installed on a uPVC door. You could opt for a keyless lock as these locks will avoid the risk of lock picking or bumping. Smart locks are another option as you operate the lock via a mobile phone so no key cylinder is needed.
4. How do Smart Locks work?
Smart locks are operated by a mobile phone and the lock is controlled remotely by a mobile phone. You can set multiple access codes or give devices to family and friends to gain access. There are various Smart lock options available on the market. The Yale Lock with Next Connect is a keyless home protection system that sends real-time alerts when someone enters your home. It has a one-touch feature that lets you lock your door at the touch of a button, and unlock it using a voice assistant, the Nest app or a unique code. The August Smart Lock includes an auto-lock feature that locks the door afters it’s closed and will auto-unlock when you are near the door. The ADT Smart Lock includes programmable locking, keyless entry and real-time alerts as people come and go.
5. Can a locksmith board up a broken window?

Secured by Design is a Police scheme that delivers a range of crime prevention initiatives to make homes more secure. Their objective is to achieve sustainable reductions in crime through design and other approaches. Secure by Design works with industry bodies and manufacturers to raise standards in product manufacture. SBD makes the following recommendations for windows:
- Windows should be installed with multipoint espagnolette locking systems that have been shown by test to meet the security requirements of PAS 24:2016 as a component part of a window of the same material. There should be locking points within 100mm from the corner of the casement.
- Unless the window is a designated emergency access route, it should have three points of locking consisting of a key-operated locking handle, and two surface mounted locks, one fitted to the end of each opener to prevent leverage.
