Choosing safe and secure replacement windows

If you’re looking to increase the security of your windows, there are some key factors to take into consideration.

From glazing through to locks, each element needs to work together to ensure your windows are safe and sound.

Choose the latest glazing features

Window glazing has improved drastically in recent years, thanks to technology. There are so many fantastic new features that will make your windows highly secure.

Modern double glazing offers multiple panes of glass that can be treated or coated to make them even stronger. For instance, impact-resistant glass has a polyvinyl butyral interlayer with glass pressed to both sides. This layer means the glass stays intact, even if it breaks.

Alternatively, tempered safety glass has been designed so that instead of breaking into dangerous shards, the glass shatters into small cubic bits.

Toughened glass is extremely resilient and up to five times stronger than normal glass. It can withstand high levels of shock and is difficult to break by force. If it does break, it disintegrates into tiny granular pieces.

And it’s not just the glazing that’s more secure. Internally fitted beading means the glass can’t be removed from the outside – a valuable security feature for any home.

Get double glazing if possible

Single glazed windows can be vulnerable to break-in, especially if they’re on the ground floor. Double glazing is tougher, and the glass units are fitted so that they can’t be removed.

uPVC double glazed windows are secure and can be locked with a multipoint locking system. Aluminium also makes a strong frame and is ideal for securing larger, heavier panes of glass in panoramic windows.

The style of window you choose can impact on security. The most secure type of window is a picture style that can’t be opened. However, most of us would rather have windows we can open and close.

Fortunately, whatever your style of window, there are now a whole host of fittings that can be incorporated to make it even more secure. Even replacement windows on period properties with a bow, sash or Georgian design can be secured with robust locking mechanisms.

The most secure window fittings

Window manufacturers now produce much stronger and secure locking systems. One of the most popular of these is a window of multi-chambered uPVC construction with welded joints for added strength.

Many replacement window suppliers will offer security fittings as standard. These include multipoint locks that bolt the window in the frame, securing it at different points.

Shoot bolt locks are worth having as steel shot bolts lock into the frame at two points, making them highly secure.

Another good safety feature that’s often included as standard is the excluder device. This means the window has an anti-jemmy device that can’t be forced open. However, this is not suitable on any access that needs to be used as a fire exit.

Key locking handles are now fitted as standard on many replacement windows. Push-button handles are also popular and can be used with a latch mechanism that locks windows when pushed. For additional protection, you can also use keys with push-button handles.
