Security for Retail Premises
For retailers, there’s a balance between making stores a welcoming venue for customers while at the same time protecting staff and goods.
However, security features for retail premises can be discreetly installed to ensure that they don’t impact on your day-to-day trading activities - inconspicuous intruder alarms, CCTV and access control can all be used to help protect your business from theft and other malicious activities.
One of the biggest problems in the retail sector is protecting stock from theft. Nowadays, there are a variety of alarms that retailers can choose from including audible and silent alarms as well as audio monitoring systems that will listen in the area of an activated alarm.
As a retailer, you need to decide on the course of action you want your staff to take should an alarm go off as this will help you pick the most suitable devices for your premises. For instance, you may want to connect an alarm to the management or security section of a store. Alternatively, you could link it directly to the police or a security company.
Alarm buttons can be positioned unobtrusively behind counters within easy reach of your store assistants. You should make sure your staff know how to use the alarm system and how to respond when it’s activated. Your alarm systems should also be tested on a regular basis.
CCTV systems allow you to keep an eye on the shop floor and cameras can act as a deterrent against any possible abuse of staff. They can also be positioned at the back of your store to prevent intruders sneaking in this way.
Visual recordings of all the activity in your shops can be monitored in real-time or saved and referred to in the event of an incident taking place.
Access control systems will ensure that only authorised staff can access your retail premises. You can monitor who enters and leaves your stores, and you can choose to control entry with an audible alert such as a bell or buzzer.
You may decide on one system for the front entrance and a different set-up for office access. For admin and/or shop floor staff you could install a control panel with a numerical keypad that requires entry of a pin number to gain access.
Other access control systems come with individual key fobs or smartcards that can be carried by your employees.
Electronic Shutters and Grilles
For retail businesses that are prone to attack such as those selling alcohol and tobacco or high-value items including electronics or jewellery, you may want to erect physical security features.
Electronic window restraints such as grilles or roller shutters can be easily installed. These can be discreetly fitted, so they provide an extra layer of safety giving you and your staff peace of mind, but once rolled up, do not impact on customer entry. They’re hidden from view when your store is open to the public and rolled down at the touch of a button at night or when extra security is needed.
